Designing the School Library as a Pedagogical Space for 21st Century Learning

Presented by Dr Chin Ee Loh - international school library researcher from the Singapore National Institute of Education whose work specialises in the role of school libraries.
Held on Monday 21 May 2018 at EDC, Hindmarsh

The design of learning spaces can constrain or encourage particular forms of learning, yet the research on how to evaluate the effectiveness of learning spaces remain scarce. In this "new culture of learning" (Thomas and Brown, 2011) students need to be open to change, ask critical questions about the world around them, imagine new solutions, and collaborate with others. Schools need to help students learn how to manage and amplify what they know to generate greater learning, and the school library is a central space for cultivating such forms of learning.

This presentation drew on a year-long comparative case study of six Singapore school libraries to examine how the design and organization of library spaces can facilitate the development of twenty-first century skills in the school library context. Dr Loh drew on detailed observations such as time freezes and field narratives, visual data such as spatial layouts, documentary and time-lapse photography and interviews with principals, teachers and students to understand how design and organization of space is effected within particular contexts and to discuss the limitations of current understandings of space.

Discussion and activities were interspersed throughout this interactive session. Participants were asked to bring e.g., photographs, loan rates and other information about their school library for the discussions.

Dr Chin Ee Loh's visit to SA was hosted by The School of Education at UniSA.
